Sobre Ronaldo
My name is Ronaldo and I’m a PhD professor with over 30 years of experience.
Some of my linguistic credentials include:
- Master’s degree (2004) and
- Doctor’s degree (2009) in Linguistic and Literary Studies in English Language from USP – Universidade de São Paulo.
- Book author (English and Portuguese)
- Certified translator – both in Brazil and the USA

My Approach
My English teaching method is “Guided Conversation” (Conversação Guiada), which is totally different from the “free conversation approach” because it’s 100% result-based.
Read the explanation below to understand the differences!
WHAT’S ‘FREE CONVERSATION’?
“Free Conversation” is undoubtedly the prevailing approach in the market.
Under such method, students are ‘free’ to talk about anything they want.
However, the free conversation approach works better for students who are already proficient in English, but it usually fails for others.
For students who can ‘only’ read English but can’t speak it yet, for those who need to expand their vocabulary and improve their pronunciation and speaking skills, ‘free conversation’ is not the best choice.
NO STRUCTURED LEARNING
One of the reasons why free conversation fails is because it consists of “pure” conversation between the teacher and the student: there’s no “structured” learning!
The lack of a defined syllabus and ‘specific’ materials hinders students in becoming fluent as they feel lost without support.
And, due to such absence of proper support and guidance, all students do during the classes is to stutter (gaguejar), struggling (lutando) to formulate sentences and pronounce words.
That’s why many linguists in the world say the free conversation method is a journey “without a map”, without a destination in mind.
And, as Henry Kissinger said once (No! I don’t like him! But his argument is appropriate here): ‘quando não se sabe qual caminho tomar, qualquer caminho serve’
SILLY TOPICS
Besides, another design failure of the free conversation approach is the usual selection of “childish” topics (tópicos infantis) for ‘adult’ students.
Just check out the common conversation questions listed below:
What’s your favorite food?
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
What type of music do you usually listen to?
These topics are always present in free conversations in English classes and you have surely heard at least one of them.
They are silly and provide no connection to the English language “adult” students need in their real lives and they won’t prompt their linguistic progress.

MY APPROACH: GUIDED CONVERSATION
The Guided Conversation approach is a very well-accepted and highly regarded practice for adult students who want to become really proficient in English.
Instead of “pure and random” conversations about silly topics, the classes in my approach are specifically structured based on pre-determined topics and targeted skills (competências direcionadas).
YOU WON’T GET LOST!
My students go to classes having been previously prepared and ‘weaponized’ (Yes! I give them ‘linguistic weapons’ and resources) to speak.
That means classes will not be ‘random’ conversations (conversas aleatórias).
TARGETED: NOW YOU HAVE A PATH TO FOLLOW
My approach is “targeted” (direcionada) as it incorporates ‘vital’ topics of current affairs (assuntos da atualidade) in the world.
The result is that my students become fluent and totally comfortable to speak English as they are prepared to express themselves about current prominent matters, enabling them to effectively communicate in English in various situations.
DON’T WORRY: YOU WON’T FORGET WHAT YOU LEARN!
Differently from the free conversation method, where new vocabulary and structures are quickly forgotten as soon as the class is over, my ‘structured’ materials have been designed to re-introduce them in upcoming classes.
That gives my students enough opportunities to practice them several times in a variety of contexts to ensure comprehension and effective memorization.
GUIDED MENTORING
The carefully driven mentoring I give my students stimulates them to break away from “commonplaces” of the standard learning of English and apply it to create conversations of “their own” as adult speakers.
Through proactive guidance and recommended scenarios, my students feel much more confident to speak in the class and upgrade their performance in English
