My native language is Portuguese and I have my own method that I'm using to learn English and other languages.
So I know how to show my students the way of learning a new language, even if they don't know nothing about Portuguese.
I'm sure I have an easy and stressless approach, without learning by heart boring grammar books.
By using more fun and relaxed method we all can learn more.
There are also apps, such as anki that can help you memorize specific phrases or expressions. If the student wants we can use this apps during the classes.
Another tip that I like is to use a digital reader, like kindle for example, to read books in the language you are learning.
Since you can see the meaning of the word, not just the translation. This helps a lot, as direct translation often doesn't work.
I can also recommend TV-shows, movies, books that can help you learn Portuguese.
I believe that training your listening skills at the beginning of language learning is the best way to get used to the new language.
